Many chimney problems start with a poorly built crown. It is the part that fails first, and once it cracks, water penetrates the chimney structure.
During the freeze–thaw cycles we get in Windsor and Essex County, that trapped moisture expands and gradually breaks down brick, mortar and internal components — which is how a small crack becomes a full rebuild.
Often just a thin layer of sand-mix concrete poured flush with the brick. As the masonry below expands and contracts through our seasonal temperature swings, that thin cap cracks and splits — and water gets into the structure.
